Guest speaker and new seismometer for Geology students!

19 January 2024

Our Science department at Ashton Sixth Form College officially has its own seismometer! This piece of equipment allows students to gather local ground movement and seismic data. This data will be analysed by Geology, Geography, Physics and Computer Science students at Ashton.

Professor David Healy, from the University of Aberdeen launched the seismometer and gave students an insightful talk about the potential applications of seismic data analysis, such as the ground shaking due to concerts and football matches. Professor Healy also explored the absence of ground shaking during the global pandemic and the differences between weekday and weekend traffic vibrations.

Thank you to Professor Healy for working with us and our students! We look forward to the work produced by our students through using the seismometer.
