About the Course

This is an excellent course for preparing you for a degree in music or just developing your knowledge further. You will have opportunities to perform, compose in a variety of styles and expand your musical knowledge of techniques and notation, through an exciting study of the Symphony orchestra and Popular Music.

Course Structure:

Influences on Music
You will develop an understanding of: the organisation of sounds (form, harmony, instrumentation and timbre, melody, rhythm and metre, texture and tonality), through the study of the ‘Symphony’ and Popular Music 1960-1990.

Creating musical ideas
You will demonstrate your ability to create and develop musical ideas with technical control and expressive understanding, making creative use of musical devices, conventions and resources in two compositions.

Interpreting musical ideas
Within this unit, you will prepare a performance lasting 12 minutes. This can include solos and/or ensemble and will demonstrate a variety of musical styles on your chosen instrument or voice. This unit will be assessed by a visiting examiner.
