Level 3 Diploma Supporting Teaching and Learning (Teaching Assistant)

Classes will run on a Wednesday evening from 6pm - 8.30pm, and will run from September 2025 - June 2026 (one academic year) 

This qualification provides an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and skills required when working directly with children or young people in primary, secondary or special educational needs schools.

It covers all aspects of specialist support including planning, delivering and reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher.

All students must be working or volunteering in a classroom setting as you will be supported and assessed in your workplace.


Who is this course for?

Anybody who is working in a role that Support pupil's learning including teaching assistants, learning support assistants, and special educational needs assistants.

Why should you join this course?

The college also offers a Foundation Degree in Education (Teaching Assistants) and a Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies. These are 2-year programmes delivered at the College part time. On completion of a Foundation Degree, it is possible to then "top up' to gain a full BA (Hons) degree. Progression opportunities very much depend on what other qualifications you have. 

A Level 3 qualification is highly valued by many employers, enhancing your opportunities for career advancement or securing a new role. Additionally, you'll gain essential knowledge in areas such as safeguarding and behavior management, equipping you with the skills needed to excel in your position


Course Length

1 year 

Wednesday evening, 6.00pm - 8.30pm.

Support in the workplace

A designated key person/s from the school is useful to support you by providing policies, guidance on work practices, opportunities to experience a range of activities, to complete witness testimonies and to confirm your competency during general duties in the setting.

How will you be assessed?

You will be assessed by your tutor or assessor using a range of methods. This could include direct observation in the workplace, a portfolio of evidence, written assignments or a task set by your tutor.
 

Entry requirements 
  • It is recommended that you hold or are working towards a Functional Skills qualification at level 2 or a GCSE Grade C/4 or above in English and maths.
  • It is recommended that you hold a Level 2 in Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools qualification.
  • You must be in employment (paid or voluntary) in a school for a minimum of 1 full day per week, working in a classroom setting with children aged 5 and above. (Any day of your choice)
  • It is recommended that you have a minimum of 6 weeks experience in a School setting prior to starting the course.
 
Cost 

The course cost is £2200, however, you may be eligible to apply for an advanced learner loan if you are age 19 and over and if it's your first full Level 3 qualification. 

OR 

GM Local Level 3 Adult Offer 

Study for free if you are aged 19 or older and live in Greater Manchester if: 

  • This is your first Level 3 qualification (which equates to two or more A-levels, four or more AS levels or BTEC/NVQ level 3 or Access to HE qualification) 
  • If you have an existing Level 3 qualification you can enrol onto a second Level 3 in a different learning area. 

If you're aged between 19-23 and live in Greater Manchester, the course may be free if: 

  • This is your first Level 3 qualification (which equates to two or more A Levels, four or more AS levels, or BTEC/NVQ level 3 or an Access to HE qualification). 

Advanced Learner Loans may be available if none of the above applies.

Candice P - HE Student / Teaching Assistant

Candice has now completed the Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning course, and has now progressed onto the Foundation Degree in Education course at the college. Candice successfully secured a volunteer role at a local school, and after a successful term, she is now employed at the school supporting the SEND children. She decided to progress onto the Foundation Degree as she has enjoyed her time at the college, and wants to progress in her career. She is hoping to progress onto our degree course, the BA (Hons) in Education, and specialise in Special Educational Needs in the longrun

Jessica P - Teaching Assistant

Jessica has now completed the Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning course and has successfully secured a job as a Teaching Assistant at a local school. Jessica came to the college in 2021, after desiring a career change. Jessica was totally new to the education sector and was unsure about her decision. However, she came on leaps and bounds and was a natural with the pupils. She put in the maximum effort with her work and won the student of the year award at the celebration evening for adult students.

Candice P - HE Student / Teaching Assistant
