Ashton Sixth Form College celebrates inclusivity and diversity at annual Culture Day event.

26 Feb 25

Students and staff at Ashton Sixth Form College came together this week for a vibrant and inspiring celebration of culture, creativity, and community at the college’s third Culture Day. The event, which has now become an annual event in the college calendar, showcased the rich diversity within the student body through music, dance, art, fashion, and cuisine from around the world.

The event was entirely student-led, with the Student Council playing a pivotal role in planning and delivering an unforgettable day. Attendees enjoyed a range of activities that celebrated the different backgrounds and traditions represented within the college. From dazzling cultural performances to an exciting fashion show highlighting traditional attire, the event fostered unity and appreciation for the richness of global heritage.

Favour Otabor, member of the Student Council commented:

“Culture Day was fantastic as it highlighted the importance of people's different cultures and backgrounds. Furthermore, having Culture Day also educated me about the different materials people wear to showcase their culture and backgrounds, the languages they speak to each other, and the foods they eat.”

Performances including traditional Indian and Afro-Caribbean dancing took place, with all students encouraged to participate and dance along. Everyone was encouraged to dress to represent their culture, filling the college full of colour and demonstrating tradition from all around the world. The food was a great hit with everything to taste from Indian, Caribbean and Italian, with the college’s canteen providing a bespoke menu offering a range of cuisines.

Reflecting on the success of the event, Centre Principal Lisa Richards said:

“What a fabulous day! This was the college's third Culture Day, and I think it is safe to say that it is now an established feature of our annual calendar. It is so important for us to celebrate our diversity and the rich cultural heritage that makes up our college community. Aside from the amazing world foods, we were treated to dancing, singing, art, and a fashion show in which students were able to show off their gorgeous cultural dress. This is a student-led event, so I want to say a huge well done and thank you to our wonderful Student Council, and the staff who supported them, for their creativity and hard work. Well done all; a great success!”

This event is part of the college’s commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion. The college are passionate about ensuring every student thrives, welcoming diversity and embracing difference.
