Autumn term sport update

25 Oct 24

During the first half of this academic year, students enrolled on our Sports courses and those participating in our sports teams have been actively engaged in competitions and matches. Here’s a look at their achievements:

Men's Football

Due to popular demand, we now have two men’s football teams, both made up of talented players eager to showcase their skills this season. With 4 games played, the teams have celebrated 2 wins, and a fantastic day at the AOC Regionals. The students thoroughly enjoyed the AOC competition and are looking forward to more matches this season.

Women's Football

Our Women's team has shown great determination this term. They competed fiercely in the AOC Regionals alongside the Men's team, where they made the College immensely proud by reaching the semi-finals! They are consistently showing resilience and great teamwork skills, and they are looking forward to their upcoming matches.

Men's Basketball

The Basketball team has secured 2 wins so far this term, and the future looks bright! With the addition of one of our Elite Basketball students and a new partnership with Tameside Vikings for coaching, the squad is set for exciting developments.

Women's Netball

The Netball team has had a strong start, with 2 wins and a closely contested match! The girls are excited for more games against local colleges over the next half term and the AOC Regionals in December.

Men's Rugby

Our Rugby team is thriving under the guidance of Sale Sharks coaches Holly and Lexie, who are enhancing their skills weekly. They recently participated in a non-academy AOC tournament and performed impressively, winning all but one of their games!

Man City Men's Team

The Manchester City Men's Team has had a fantastic start to the season, achieving 3 wins. They are showing great potential to contend for the league title this season under the leadership of coach Ruben.

Man City Women's Team

Our brand-new women’s team is off to an encouraging start as they embark on their first season in the league. They are dedicated to improving their skills and knowledge with the support of coach Dane.

Ashton Elite

Our Ashton Elite programme is dedicated to supporting the next generation of Elite Athletes in college. The programme offers wrap around support for students who are competitively playing sport at a higher level, with benefits such as timetable flexibility, financial support and coaching and mentoring.

In its second year, the Ashton Elite program has expanded by 50%, with sports diversifying from Taekwondo to golf and Rugby league to artistic swimming! Our Sports Coordinator, Russell, is excited to work with and support these talented students in the coming year.

Enrichment Sporting Activities

Numbers have been excellent for the lunchtime enrichment activities, including Futsal, Table Tennis and Badminton. These sports are extremely popular with regular numbers exceeding 20 participants each week!

Overall, participation in sporting activities has risen significantly this academic year, highlighting our students’ commitment to staying active and prioritising their well-being. It’s inspiring to see so many students engaging in these activities alongside their academic studies. We look forward to even more successes and achievements in the coming half term!
