Concept 2050: Ashton Sixth Form College 3D Design Students Reimagine the Future
First-year 3D Design & Technology students at Ashton Sixth Form College have spent the past few months working on an exciting project culminating in the annual Concept 2050 exhibition.
In response to a simulated live brief from leading construction firm Balfour Beatty, students were challenged to envision the future of the college’s architecture and environment. This project encouraged them to push the boundaries of innovation and sustainability while applying their creative and technical skills.
Since the start of the academic year, students have engaged in the full design process—from initial brainstorming and sketching to detailed design development and model creation using the department’s specialist equipment. Their final concepts showcase remarkable creativity, problem-solving, and technical ability.
The exhibition featured both physical and digital models, with live feedback from an expert judging panel comprising professional architects and designers from Balfour Beatty and Modern City Architecture & Urbanism (MCAU). This invaluable experience allowed students to present their work in a professional setting, gaining insight into industry expectations and receiving constructive critique.
We were also honoured to welcome the Worshipful the Civic Mayor of Tameside, Councillor Betty Affleck, and her Consort, Declan Fitzpatrick, as special guests at the event.
She commented “It’s been absolutely amazing; I’m awestruck over the amount of talent in these students. I think the designs are unbelievable – our future is in safe hands. They all considered the environment, health and safety and mental health and combined all that into their designs and produced some marvelous ideas.”
The judges recognised students' outstanding efforts by presenting four awards for excellence in the following categories. Congratulations to our winners:
Best External Design - Zack Sidebottom
Best Interior Design - Ramaya Annan
Most Creative Design - Lucas Calvert
Best Model - Hanna Adesanya
Erin Day, Head of Art & Design at Ashton, commented: “As Head of Art and Design, I’m incredibly proud of the work our students and staff have produced for Concept 2050. This year’s exhibition is a true reflection of the dedication, creativity and industry-standard practice that defines our department. With support from Balfour Beatty, Abodiology and Modern City Architecture and Urbanism (MCAU), students have responded to real-world design challenges with a professional mindset and bold, innovative thinking.
The project has grown significantly from previous years, now encompassing digital animation, immersive virtual reality environments and a greater emphasis on high-quality physical modelling. These developments not only raise the standard of the work on display but also demonstrate the evolving ambition of our learners and the outstanding teaching that supports them.”
Concept 2050 continues to be an inspiring platform for students to explore futuristic design, refine their technical skills, and engage with industry professionals, preparing them for exciting careers in architecture and design. A huge well done to all partcipating students!
