Jonathan Reynolds MP inspires Ashton Sixth Form College students with engaging Q&A
Jonathan Reynolds, the Labour MP for Stalybridge and Hyde and Secretary of State for Business and Trade, visited us this morning to deliver an inspiring talk and question and answer session with our A1 A Level Politics students.
The intimate Q&A provided students with the unique opportunity to gain firsthand insights into the daily life and responsibilities of a Member of Parliament. Jonathan started the session by sharing his own journey into politics, from studying at sixth form and university to representing his constituents in Parliament.
Students asked a variety of thoughtful and challenging questions, addressing topics such as the newly appointed Labour government, pressing local issues in Manchester—including public transport—and what motivates Jonathan to remain dedicated to his political career. In his responses, Reynolds provided detailed explanations of Labour’s policy positions and demonstrated his commitment to the people of Tameside and his passion for fostering positive change within the community.
Jonathan also shared advice and encouragement to students interested in engaging with local politics, pointing out that many members of the Tameside Labour Party have been former students of Ashton Sixth Form College, including Hamza Aslam. Hamza left Ashton in 2023 and progressed on to study Politics and Modern History at The University of Manchester. Whilst at college, Hamza was elected Labour Councillor for Mossley Parish and is now continuing his work with the Labour Party, as a Constituency Support Officer for Johnathan Reynolds MP. Hamza’s return to the college during the visit as part of Jonathan’s team added a special element to the day, showcasing the potential career pathways for current students.
As the Q&A concluded, Jonathan expressed his admiration for the students’ enthusiasm and curiosity about both local and national politics. He remarked on how much he enjoyed addressing their questions and engaging with their perspectives.
This session is part of our commitment to providing outstanding opportunities for our students, helping them connect with influential figures and gain valuable insights into diverse fields.
A huge thank you to Jonathan for inspiring our students!
