Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care

Course Description

The qualification develops a deep common core of knowledge, understanding and skills in the sector through mandatory content. The content of this qualification has been developed to ensure it supports progression to higher study and employment. In addition to the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin study of health and social, this qualification gives learners experience of the breadth and depth that will prepare them for further study in the sector.

Assessment is specifically designed to fit the purpose and objective of the qualification. It includes a range of assessment types and styles suited to vocational qualifications in the sector. There are three main forms of assessment, which include:

  • Examinations
  • Assignment work
  • Set tasks

The department has two technical rooms, which have been set up to represent an early years setting and a hospital ward. The hospital room has a wide range of resources you would find in a hospital ward.

The future career prospects are very wide and varied once you have completed the level 3 health and social care course. You will have the opportunity to apply for many different options of degrees and career pathways. 

Your course will cover a wide range of academic and practical tasks. During this you will study a range of units including:

Unit 1: Human Lifespan Development

Unit 2: Working in Health and Social Care

Unit 3: Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care

Unit 4: Enquiries into Current Research in Health and Social Care

Unit 5: Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs

Unit 6: Work Experience in Health and Social Care

Unit 7: Principles of Safe Practice in Health and Social Care

Unit 8: Promoting Public Health

Unit 9: Infection Prevention and Control

Unit 12: Supporting Individuals with Additional Needs

Unit 14: Physiological Disorders

Unit 18: Assessing Children’s Development Support Needs

Unit 19: Nutritional Health

During the course, both your academic and practical skills will be developed. You will undertake a minimum of 50 hours of Vocational placement working within the Health and social care sector in the first year and then a minimum of 100 hours in the second year. The placement experience will give you the opportunity to gain confidence and develop the essential skills to start your career. The skills you will develop whilst on placement include teamwork, following placement policies and procedures, health and safety, use of initiative, ability to communicate effectively with others, be able to demonstrate caring skills, responding and acting promptly and efficiently to the needs of others.

External and Internal assessment

A whole range of academic and fun enrichment will be planned during your 2 years at college. Recent enrichment include: Disney land Paris, Chester Zoo, Alton towers, cinema, Cathedral, Buddhist centre, Jewish Museum, guest speakers and outstanding placements.
