Course Description

This fantastic course will give you the creative and analytical skills you need to become a great photographer. You will be able to personalise your journey by choosing your own projects along the way. As a photography student, you will learn how to use our industry standard equipment and software in our purpose built art building. As well as a dedicated computer suite, you will have use of two well stocked photography studios and a fully operational darkroom.

Following a skill building period, you will embark on personal exploration on your own chosen themes, which are developed through independent research, gallery visits, and experimentation with a wide range of materials and techniques.

This course is ideal if you are creative and want to explore what you can really do with a camera.  Would you like to see behind the scenes?

Year 1:

●       Skill Building Phase

●       Personal Project: Learning to develop ideas further in a longer project.

 

Year 2:

●       Component 1: Personal Investigation (60% of A Level Grade)

●       Component 2: Externally Set Assignment (40% of A Level Grade)

You will take part in skills workshops looking at photography techniques and areas such as:

●       SLR photography – What do camera settings do?

●       compositional techniques

●       digital editing

●       studio photography

●       light painting

●       scanography

●       manual manipulation

●       darkroom techniques

●       sketchbook presentation

These workshops will help you to discover the type of photographer you are. Working in sketchbooks, you will apply the skills you have learned to short briefs and longer projects which use development of ideas and refinement to work towards finished pieces. More advanced skills are covered as the course progresses such as more complex editing, darkroom techniques or more specific lighting setups.

Students choose variety of pathways in photography, whether it’s university, an apprenticeship or straight into the industry.

Externally Set Assignment: sketchbooks and final pieces with Exam Board Moderation

  • Cross-Departmental New York Trip: Art and Performing Arts
  • Regular visits to Photography / Art Exhibitions in the North West
