How does the body work during exercise? Why is sport becoming a social phenomenon? How does the body adapt to training? These are all questions you will explore and more on the sport courses we offer here at Ashton.

This course focusses on all aspects of sport from science related topics such as exercise physiology right through to nutrition and coaching. This two year course is designed to give you an all-round experience of the sport sector. Work placements are a compulsory part of this course and we try to offer placements in a variety of different sectors. Students have been placed in schools, coaching at FC United and as personal trainers. The practical experience you will gain, alongside your teaching will prepare you for the next steps of your career.

This course is backed by some major employers and professional bodies, such as: Rugby Football League, Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMPSA), League Football Education, Skills Active and Sports Coach UK. This qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as meeting admission requirements for many relevant specialist courses.

Anatomy and Physiology

You will explore how the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems function and the fundamentals of the energy systems.

Fitness Training and Programming

You will explore client screening and lifestyle assessment, fitness training methods and fitness programming to support improvements in a client’s health and wellbeing.

Leadership in Sport

You will study what makes a good leader, the different capacities of this role, and the leadership skills and techniques necessary when leading activities in different roles.

Fitness Testing

You will gain an understanding of the requirements of fitness testing and learn how to safely conduct a range of fitness tests for different components of fitness.

Sports Psychology

This unit covers the psychological dimensions of sport, and introduces psychological techniques that can be used to enhance performance.
