13 August 2015

Ashton Sixth Form College adds another year of success to its 140 year record as a leader of academic excellence in the area. We are celebrating some outstanding A-Level results today. We have maintained an outstanding A-level pass rate of 98% - exceeding the A-Level national average. Ashton Sixth Form College is particularly delighted by the increase in students attaining the top grades in their courses – high grades (A*, A, B) have increased again this year and a huge 75%  of all A-Levels taken by Ashton Sixth Form Students were graded A*-C.

The Ashton Sixth Form College Class of 2015 has managed to surpass national averages at A Level and equivalent qualifications. College Principal, Dr Janet Nevin said: “This is the fourth consecutive year that we have increased the number of students achieving high grades. Our A*- C grades increased from 73% to 75% and we again achieved 98% pass rate overall at A Level. This consistently high performance reinforces our position as one of the best post -16 providers in the area.

Ashton students remain ambitious, with over 600 students making applications to university. A staggering 270 offers were received from prestigious Russell Group Institutions. Early indications suggest that many of these students have today received the grades needed to turn these offers into places, and will soon begin the next step of their educational journey.

Three students secured places at Oxford and Cambridge universities with many others gaining places at some of the top Russell Group Institutions to study sought-after degree courses from maths to medicine, engineering to economics and politics to psychology. Several other successful students have gained places on highly competitive apprenticeships including BT and local law firms.

More than half of the sixth form’s AS/A-level courses had perfect pass rates of 100% in addition to a 100% pass rate across all BTEC Level 3 Diploma courses.  80% students completing a vocational qualification achieved Distinction grades, with 44 students achieving triple Distinction*, the highest grades possible.

One student celebrating high grade success is Rhian Armstrong who achieved full marks, a perfect 100% mark in both years of her Psychology A-Level, an extraordinary achievement. Rhian’s dream to study Psychology at Oxbridge has come true with a secured place at Cambridge University.

Dr Janet Nevin comments “Our success this year highlights yet again the huge contribution that Sixth Form Colleges have on the lives of young people. Our achievements today are a result of the commitment, work and expertise of students and college staff. I wish all of our students the best of luck as they embark on their next step to university, an apprenticeship or into employment.”
