Inspirational Women kick off National Careers Week and International Womens Day

8 March 2016

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2016 and as part of our Imagine Your Future Lecture Series, we were pleased to welcome four inspirational women who all work within the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) sector to take part in a Women in STEM panel.

Students from Ashton Sixth Form College and pupils from Copley High School grilled the panel which consisted of former Ashton Sixth Form College student Pam Harrison - Senior Analytical Scientist, AstraZeneca, Rebecca Sheridan- Phagenesis (Medical Devices), Amy Friel- Transport Planning, AECOM and Ling Lim - PhD in Environmental Planning & Engineering.

The event was introduced by Dr Janet Nevin, Principal of Ashton Sixth Form, who explained to the students how important today was about raising awareness of not only the STEM subjects but that their gender should not be a barrier into getting the career that they want to pursue,
Dr Nevin said “If you have got a talent and passion for these STEM areas, then go for it. The world will be your oyster.”

Ling Lim who has completed her PhD in Environmental Engineering specifically looking at Air Quality and the pollutions from cars, shared her story and talked about her role within a male-dominated environment. She talked about her PhD work and how it has now given her the opportunity to teach.
“I have never been told I couldn’t achieve because I was a woman.”

Imagine Your Future month culminates in the Imagine Your Future Careers and Progression event on Monday 21st March 5.00 – 7.30pm. Find out more and sign up to attend here
