Students at Ashton Sixth Form College celebrate outstanding results

15 August 2019

Ashton Sixth Form College has achieved another set of outstanding results from this summer’s examinations. More students than ever have secured top marks across both A level and Vocational courses with over 750 A*/A grades awarded to students˚  this year, 70% high grades (A*-B) were achieved˚  and 38 courses have 100% pass rates. In addition, an impressive 94% of all grades achieved on Level 3 courses were A*-C˚ .
˚  figures include vocational equivalents

The college, which is positioned as the best in the area in Department for Education league tables released in January 2019, continues to achieve year on year success and this year’s set of results reflect this.

Out of the 1672 entries, the college achieved a 98% pass rate at A Level with more A* grades achieved by students than ever before. Five students have secured places at Oxford or Cambridge Universities, one of the highest numbers of Ashton Sixth Form students to secure places at Oxbridge in the college’s history.

College Principal Anton McGrath said,

"We’re proud of the achievements of our students and congratulate them on their fantastic results. What’s more impressive is that these outstanding results have been achieved during a time of significant change in A level assessment. For the first time, students have completed truly linear qualifications with all assessment at the end of two years’ of study. For these students, the stakes were higher; they had to perform on the day to achieve their grades. Our students have shown real resilience and have flourished in this new regime.”

Vocational performance continued to be outstanding in all areas, with 100% pass rates for BTEC courses and over 9 out of 10 BTEC students achieving the highest Distinction grades. Anton McGrath added,

"the consistent high performance of our BTEC courses is phenomenal; to continue to produce first class outcomes year in year out is astounding. These students should be proud of their efforts throughout the year; it has been worth the effort!”

“Each and every one of our students should take some time to reflect on their magnificent achievement; we wish them well for the next stage of their career, whether moving to university, beginning an apprenticeship or joining the world of work. They have worked with determination and enthusiasm, ably supported by the teaching, pastoral and support staff at the College and are reaping the rewards. We wish them all the best for their futures.”

Recently shortlisted for sixth-form college of the year, Ashton Sixth Form College continues to be a centre of excellence in the local area, providing young people with access to outstanding progression opportunities.
